Hi all......
As with any of our mail outs, there have been a number of letters bouncing back to me with a new address, and others listed as “addressee unknown“ or “unable to forward”. Those that noted a new address (about a dozen) were are re-sent a letter, while the others sit in my folder.

I wanted to list some of the “unknowns” hoping one of you might know where these folks are, or maybe know someone else who could provide a contact lead.  Here are those classmate names:

Back in Minneapolis less than 24 hours (from Pensacola) and just learned that my dear friend Ken Johnsen passed away March 9th in Ely, MN.
I spoke with his brother, Bruce, who had left a recorder message for us regarding Ken's death.  Saddened by the news..... quite a shock.

2018 Reunion Gathering
70th birthday party

SATURDAY
August 25th, 2018

Hi all......
I have confirmed an arrangement with the Crystal VFW to have our reunion gathering / 70th birthday party there on

SATURDAY, August 25th, 2018.
The near unanimous preference of a Saturday versus Friday gathering was the basis for the switch.  We will work with the club to see about having a band in the house that Saturday.
Our next decision is about what time span to select for the gathering that day.  I'm told the room will be ours for the day, so we need to consider a start time.  I thought about a 4 - 11 time frame that would allow for early dining (for those wishing to do so), as well as an earlier end point for those who no longer favor late nights.  Perhaps we should meet once more in October to settle this, then full scale promotion can begin.
Regards,
Terry Tompkins

Hi all......

So, is anyone struggling with post reunion blues?  Though there are always reasons for wishing elements of the gathering might continue, this event left me feeling satisfied and complete.  That is, except for bill paying and accounting tasks.

While I am waiting for the final statement from the DoubleTree, I also know there are additional expenses some of you incurred that we should be settling.  Please reply with a summary of those expenses some time in the next week or so and I will settle-up costs with you as well.  I look forward to our pot luck gathering (or whatever we decide to do) to celebrate our accomplishments.  When and where do you want to do this?

Something truly remarkable just happened. Together, we created an experience that for many unites elements of childhood with who we are today. Reaching beyond fifty years ago at North, earlier bonds were strengthened and threads of life were woven tighter. Relationships we currently enjoy were made even more important for the future. You played an enormous part in our success... for me, your efforts define what it means to be a "polar" and you have enriched my life. Thank you.

I choose to believe we are more now than we were in 1966. No startling revelation.... until you think about those who never made it this far, others who have been less fortunate, or people whose lives had fewer connecting threads to depend on.

Again, thank you for your many contribution to our success. Next, we will see where our classmates want to go from here..... after we celebrate our accomplishment.

Yours truly.... and proudly,
Terry Tompkins

      A State of the “Re”Union message …………. August 27th, 2016

I can happily report that the state of the “re”union (and the NHS Class of ’66) is good and there are reasons to be excited and appreciative as we gather for our 50-year reunion this weekend. Though every gathering brings uncertainties, it also brings reasons to be thankful about who we are, how far we have come, and the paths we have traveled in our lifetime.

Maintaining our class directory is a never-ending job and we again ask your help to contact us with all address and email changes.  A small investment on your part makes a huge difference to those organizing our reunions.  An accurate directory also enables us to honor classmates who have passed away, as we do again this reunion for the seventy-seven who started with us so many years ago.

This year’s addition of the “working class of ‘66” project highlights the wide-ranging contributions made by classmates in their volunteer work, beginning jobs and careers over the past fifty years. Receiving registrations and inquiries from all of you placed me in the unique position of reading each and every description. The variation is enormous and I have no doubt the collective impact has been immense in the lives of our families, communities, work places and professions. Take some time to look at and think about what the class of ’66 has accomplished.

In ways I might never have predicted, a north side perspective follows me still and influences who I am and what I do. It was present during my time at the University of Minnesota; it helped shape a forty-year career in social work and education; it influences how I see the world and the people around me; and it contributed to my being a husband, friend, father, and more recently a grandparent. Fifty years later my north side roots and the fact that I stumbled my way into a lifelong position as president of the Class of 1966 continues to enrich me personally. I am and always will be thankful for the opportunities, experiences and relationships that were born on the north side.

"Due to the increasing number of NHS grads and guests registering for the Saturday (August 27th) reunion at the DoubleTree, our room location has been changed.  We will meet in the same area, but in the combined main floor space of Plaza 5 & 6.  The Plaza Mall immediately outside the rooms will also be ours for the evening."   Terry
"A request for those spending Saturday evening at the DoubleTree:  if you wish to meet for breakfast and more conversation on Sunday morning, we can be accommodated in the Crescent Kitchen restaurant between 8:30 and 10:00 AM.  If we know 24 people would commit, the manager will bring in an extra server and seat us in an adjoining area.  A breakfast buffet is available for $12.95 pp. Please email Terry Tompkins at  tpdrewcrew@gmail.com  by August 24th if you want to be included."

"50 Year" Reunion Attendance

Hopefully, this invitation finds you well and considering attending the 50-year class reunion in August. We expect it to be another great opportunity to renew friendships and our common ties as “polars”.

If the cost of attendance is hindering a decision to join us, please contact Terry Tompkins (phone: 612-922-9448 or email: tpdrewcrew@gmail.com) to see if an adjustment can be made.  All contacts will be kept confidential.

Similarly, if life has been kind to you and you would like to help another classmate’s ability to attend, please include any additional contribution with your registration form and accept our thanks for doing so.

From a friend for a friend
With a heavy heart today especially...Nothing is more painful than watching someone at the end of their life because of cancer. Trying to look good, but after chemo and radiation ... you know the person is physically changed and they're in shock!! I know many of you do not give a hoot about this message because, of course, the cancer has not touched you. You do not know what it's like to have fought the fight or had a loved one who leads a battle against cancer. For all the men and women I know, I ask you a small favor and only some of you will do it... If you know someone who has led a battle against cancer, still struggling or who passed, please add this to your status for one hour as a mark of respect and remembrance ...

Subject:  Creativity on the Job! "Man skips work"

Man skips work for 6 years; no one notices

A 69-year-old Spanish man was fined this week after officials discovered he hadn't shown up to work for at least six years, the Guardian reports. Ironically, the civil servant was discovered only when the deputy mayor attempted to give him an award for 20 years of "loyal and dedicated" service in 2010. “I thought, where is this man?" the Guardianquotes the deputy mayor. "Is he still there? Has he retired? Has he died?” According to the Independent, a legal case was launched against the man — Joaquín García — that year. It finally wrapped up this week, with García, who retired in 2011, losing an appeal and being issued a fine of approximately $30,000, the Times reports. That's the equivalent of one year's salary after taxes, and was the most that could legally be reclaimed.

The investigation into García determined he hadn't been to his office for at least six years—and possibly as long as 14 years — and had done "absolutely no work" between 2007 and 2010. He was supposed to be supervising the construction of a water treatment plant, the BBC reports. But the water company thought the city council was in charge of García, while the city council thought the water company was in charge of him. A water company manager admitted to not having seen García for years despite having an office across from him. García argues he was bullied and given a job with no actual work to do because of his socialist politics. As for what he did with all his free time: The Guardian reports he became "an avid reader of philosophy and an expert on the works of Spinoza." (A Spanish mayormade taking an afternoon nap the law.)

Hi,
Here are the links to 2 web pages I created from the emails of these classmates. Ted was missing and Scott was just updating his sight. Could you please check your web page and send me additional information so I can update it.
Thanks for contacting the hotel. The problems are all worked out and we have booked our room. I just don't have the confirmation email yet. Hope you are having a great time.
Tell Penny we loved her Facebook post on the dog getting in the trash can. It made us laugh which is good on a dreary Friday in Minnesota.
If you have any spare time could you go through the web site and check to see if you find any errors or links that don't work. No one is proofing this site and I know I must make a few mistakes. I am working on updating the individual web pages and doing the links so eventually you can just move from one to the other. I hope to have the linking done by the time we leave for Las Vegas in March.

Thanks,
Floyd

1st Reminder……

Looking ahead, please mark your calendar for the next reunion "planning" meeting for our 50-year NHS get-together…..
Wednesday, October 7th, 7:00 PM at Terry & Penny Tompkins' home (4536 Drew Avenue South, Minneapolis… 612-922-9448)

We will review plans to date, including activities for Friday at the Richfield American Legion Post (August 26, 2016) and the main event Saturday at the Hilton DoubleTree (August 27, 2016)
Discussion of committee work and ideas for additional activities on Friday and/or Sunday morning is also being encouraged.

Please join us: there's much to be done and our meetings include lots of fun reminiscing!

As always, if you know a classmate who might like to participate, bring them along.
Terry Tompkins

July 10th, 2015 (1:42pm)

According to the terrific website that Floyd is maintaining for our class, we're just 414 days away from the reunion, 413 for those planning to attend Friday's gathering the night before!

Thanks to all who were able to attend the last planning meeting at Carol and Dave Haiders on June 24th.

Looking ahead, our next projected meeting (unless a need arises in the interim) will be Wednesday, October 7th at 7:00 pm at Penny and Terry Tompkins home (4536 Drew Avenue South in Minneapolis).

Following the last get together, the August 27th, 2016 event contract with the Hilton DoubleTree (in Bloomington) was signed and secured with a $500 deposit; we will again be able to plan from the luncheon vs. dinner menu to help contain costs; contact was made with the Richfield American Legion Post 435 for the gathering on Friday August 26th (to be finalized in early August when they get their 2016 calendar opened); and discussion began with the DoubleTree regarding a setting aside a block of rooms for guests wishing to stay there during the reunion (likely 15 rooms on Friday and 20 on Saturday, details to follow).

Thanks to Davidene for the suggestion of looking into a shuttle service from the hotel to the Legion on Friday night for persons staying there. I have learned that a shuttle is available for destinations within a five mile radius: for 14 passengers the cost is $75 round trip, and for up to 21 passengers the cost is $100 roundtrip. That comes out to a reasonable $5 roundtrip price per person. Some logistics would be involved in setting it up, but we need not deal with that at this time.

Please put the next meeting date on your calendars and continue to visit Floyd's website (nhs66.com) for updates, or the Facebook link if you use that site. Also, refer classmates to either myself, Carol or Floyd for the purposes of updating contact info and news about fellow classmates.

Thanks!!
Terry

May 2nd, 2015 (2:34pm)

Thanks to all who were able to attend this weeks meeting at Carol and Dave's (and to them for the hosting the meeting). We're on our way!

The decision was made to contact the Bloomington DoubleTree as the desired site for the 50 year reunion.
I spoke with my contact person Thursday morning and we now have a confirmed date for the event: Saturday, August 27th, 2016.
I expect to receive contract and further information in next week.

Related to having a grad / guest gathering the night before, I'm exploring options for a space at the Richfield American Legion (65th and Portland Ave. S.) on Friday, August 26th, 2016, based on discussion of its proximity to the DoubleTree, minimal costs, and the availability of live music.
Penny and I were there last night and spoke with a mutual friend who books bands at the Legion. I have copied a separate e-mail about our discussion with him to you for your awareness.

Though a specific date and location for our next planning meeting isn't set, we will need to meet in late June or early July.

Recapping committee info (additional volunteers welcomed):
1. Directory / mailing / registrations / hotel and site coordination: Terry and Carol
2. Registration / reception table: Carol and Dave
3. Decorations: Kathy, Mary and Billy
4. Door prizes: Julianna
5. Entertainment:
6. Contact with NHS re: "re-graduation diplomas": Kathy

Sorry if I have omitted anything. Please spread the word and direct updates of grad contact info back to me ASAP.

Terry T.

January 5th, 2015 (5:14pm)

Wishing you all a Happy & Healthy New Year!

Spending time on New Year's Eve with a great group of people that included two fellow grads prompts this reminder that planning for our 50-year reunion is starting. Our first meeting is in a week and this is a perfect time to share ideas you have for the event.

Responses to the July update were limited, but appreciated. The fifteen or so who replied shared these thoughts:
* A roughly 50/50 split favored our prior location (DoubleTree in Bloomington) vs. a new site;
* An 80/20 split favored a two-day vs. single day gathering, with the inclusion of music mentioned by several;
* An approximate 65/35 split favored a more casual, less expensive gathering, while many felt prior costs have been reasonable ; and
* A 55/45 split said a buffet or appetizer options were preferable to a sit-down dinner, mostly because a dinner limited the amount of time available to chat with others.

So, what do you think?  Help shape the experience by contacting us now.  Also, please share this with fellow classmates and ask that they get back to me at this e-mail address!  Finding and communicating with classmates is a monumental challenge.  Help, if you can.

Finally, if you are in the Minneapolis area and would like to be a part of the planning, contact me ASAP for details about our get together on January 14th.

Best wishes,
Terry Tompkins

December 30th, 2014 (5:11pm)

The time for reunion planning has arrived and you are receiving this because of your interest in helping to plan our 50 year reunion in 2016.  It may sound a long way off, but it's not and we need to get started.

Please join us Wednesday, January 14th at 7:00 pm at the home of Terry and Penny Tompkins (4536 Drew Avenue South, Minneapolis) to begin the planning.  Your ideas and help are very much needed.

An e-mail seeking ideas from classmates this past July resulted in the following, based on a limited number of replies:
* A roughly 50/50 split favoring our past location (DoubleTree in Bloomington) vs. another location;
* An 80/20 split favoring a two-day gathering vs. single day, with the inclusion of music mentioned by several;
* An approximate 65/35 split favoring a more casual, less expensive gathering vs. an event where price was considered flexibly;
* A 55/45 split favoring a buffet or casual dining component vs. a sit-down dinner.

These thoughts can guide our first discussion.  Please plan on joining us and RSVP either way, if possible.
Also, if you know someone who would be interested in joining the planning group, please invite them and let me know ASAP.

See you on the 14th of January.

Seems impossible, but we are on the verge of our 50-year NHS reunion....... so, if you haven't attended in a while and you said, "I'm waiting for the big 50", this is it!

Planning starts soon and we need to know how you would like to celebrate the 50th!

Please take a moment to reply to the questions below. Your thoughts will be very, very helpful. Also, pass this along to fellow grads with a request to e-mail me with their thoughts. Getting the word out is difficult and we can't do it alone. So, please reply and share the info with anyone who would likely welcome the contact.

Reunion Event Questions

1. When and where should the reunion be held? (the last three were at the Radisson in Bloomington, now a DoubleTree Hotel)

2. Would you prefer a single day or evening event, or an extended two-day gathering?

3. Would you be more inclined to attend a causal, informal event that minimizes expenses, or do you prefer something else?

4. Would you prefer having a sit-down dinner, or should we skip it?

5. Are you willing and able to help us contact classmates and/or plan the event?

Hi guys.....

I spoke last night with Barb McGee regarding Jim Marshall's passing.

It sounds like his death was likely a result of congestive heart failure, or at least complications that often go with that sort of problem.

Barb said we would see an announcement in this coming weekend's StarTribune.  The plan as she understood it was for a 12:00 PM visitation at the Cremation Society of Minnesota (4343 Nicollet Avenue South) on Friday, April 26th, followed by the funeral at 1:00 PM.

I'll keep you posted if I hear more.

Terry T.

April 15th, 2013

FYI.......

I was contacted Saturday with the news that Jim Marshall died Friday night.
No additional information yet: I just went online to the StarTribune, but there was no obituary at this time.  I'll keep you posted.

We received this message from Kathy Heikke this afternoon: wanted the two of you to be aware.
Having a good (non-snowy) time in Florida. It's rainy and very windy today, but that's not too hard to take at all.
Today was Mardi Gras..... party and parades, beads galore, followed by "Bushwackers" ( a frozen drink with lots of Bacardi 151 in it).... Let the good time s roll!!!

Terry, just a short note to let you know that Linda Evjen Olson passed away on Feb 7.

Sorry I didn't get the time before my busy season started to call so you, Penny, Mel and I could get together and now you lucky snowbirds get to go South.  Hope you have a great time...lets go for a burger when you get back, well, after the tax season.

Hi gang......

It goes without saying.... but should nonetheless be said LOUDLY...... that none of what we experienced the past two days would have been possible or nearly as enjoyable as it was without each of you and the many contributions you made on behalf of our classmates.

Friday evening was great fun and made even better by last night and this morning at the DoubleTree. The past 30 years of being involved in the planning helps me to realize that as fun as the evenings have been, it's the closer connections with with people like you that creates the best memories and feelings of accomplishment. It's the coming together that makes the staying together so special.

Thanks again for all that you have done for each other and our group. It will be fun to see the photos later on.

P.S. ..... remember, we'll be planning a post-party celebration, probably on our patio, in the very near future.... stay tuned for details.
Thanks again,

Terry & Penny Tompkins

To all NHS Class of '66 Grads and friends...........

Experiencing a last minute change of plans?   Wondering if you can still get in on the 45-year class reunion?
While it may be too late to attend with the guarantee of a dinner, it's NOT too late to join your friends and classmates for the rest of the evening!

Graduates (and guests) who would like to attend w/o dinner can still come....... just check-in at our registration table and enjoy the reunion at a reduced cost of $20 per person (to cover event expenses).

If you are still thinking about it..... stop, make the decision and plan on attending!!

Remember: Friday night several of us are meeting at the MEDINA Entertainment Center (an on-your-own, come as you are gathering with great music).... and Sunday morning, we have arranged an on-your-own group breakfast time at the DoubleTree Hotel (around 8:30 am).

We hope you will be able to participate in one or more of the reunion events!!

For the reunion committee.........

Dan Grise has been playing guitar and singing in bands for more years than he would care to admit. He began his career with a high school friend in a band called Harvey. He went full time with a "back to the fifties"band called The Golden Rock Review. That was in the days when nightclubs had music with the same band six nights a week. Dan and two other members then splintered off to form Sugartree. Four years later, Dan and another member began Visions, which had a seven year run. For more Click Here...

It was the mid-seventies and many of Allen's friends had purchased their first guitars, but they had no one to provide those sweet low notes. Soon Allen's friend Greg marched him off to the music store, loaned him the money, and bought him his first bass. "It was a red hollow body Epiphone and the strings were about an inch off the fretboard at the seventh fret." Perfect for building up hand strength! Nobody seemed to care if Allen had learned to play the darn thing yet "just come over and jam". Click Here

Hi to all...........

Only 7 weeks until the NHS '66 Reunion........ hope you plan on attending!

Not yet registered?  Please contact us ASAP...... doing it sooner rather than later REALLY helps our efforts.

Special note: don't be fooled by a name change....... the Sheraton Bloomington (Hwy's 494 & 100) in a matter of days will officially transition to become a DoubleTree by Hilton.  We suggest reconfirming any reservations to avoid surprises.

For additional information be sure to visit the website created by Floyd and Linda Ruggles........  go to  nhs66.com  and click on the school picture to access the site.

We do our best to spread the word and invite everyone...... you can help by sharing information with friends you are in touch with.
If they haven't been contacted, it's because we don't know where they are. Please have them contact either myself or Carol Pagel Haider (dhaider@isd.net  or call 612-788-1700) for more information.

Best regards....... see you soon!

Dear NHS ’66 Grads………..

About 345 reunion announcement and registration flyers went out in mid-May.

Of these, approximately 40 were returned as undeliverable in the U.S. mail.

Twenty of these have been re-sent to addresses that, hopefully, will find their way to our grads.

Below is a list of returned mailings that we had no immediate way of forwarding. Contact us ASAP with new information for anyone you know. In addition there are many, many more (about 190) whose locations have been a mystery for some time. Unsure about a friend? Call Terry Tompkins (612-922-9448) or Carol Pagel Haider (612-788-1700) to check on or share new information.
